Deadly floods in Nepal and neighboring China have renewed concerns about the growing climate risks facing Himalayan communities, where melting glaciers, unstable mountain slopes and extreme weather events are making recovery increasingly difficult.
When a massive wall of water, rocks and mud swept through her remote village in Nepal, Pema Tamang and other residents escaped to a Buddhist shrine rebuilt after the devastating 2015 earthquake. The structure that once represented recovery from one disaster became a refuge from another.
“We were able to rebuild the stupa only last year after it was destroyed during the earthquake,” Tamang told The Associated Press. “Sheltering in it was how we saved our lives from the floods.”
Himalayan Floods Leave Thousands Dead or Missing
The Aug. 26 floods across Nepal and neighboring China killed more than 1,000 people and left thousands missing, including hundreds feared trapped inside hydropower tunnels.
The disaster was triggered after a collapse of bedrock and glacier ice sent enormous amounts of debris and water through Himalayan river systems, devastating communities downstream.
Scientists say it is too early to directly attribute the disaster to global warming. However, rising temperatures caused by fossil fuel emissions are increasing the likelihood of extreme events in the Himalayas, one of the fastest-warming regions on Earth.
“Climate change has been playing a large role in the Hindu Kush Himalayas, causing these kinds of complex disasters which have really impacted downstream communities and investments,” said Saswata Sanyal, a disaster risk resilience expert at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development.
Climate Change Intensifies Himalayan Disasters
The Himalayan region is increasingly facing interconnected hazards where one disaster can trigger another.
Rising temperatures accelerate glacier melt, increasing the risk of rockslides, avalanches and floods. In some cases, an avalanche or landslide can block a river before releasing a destructive flash flood. Heavy rainfall afterward can worsen the damage.
Recent disasters across the Himalayan region include major floods in Nepal, the 2013 Kedarnath floods in India, the 2021 Chamoli disaster and the 2023 South Lhonak glacial lake outburst flood in Sikkim. These events have killed thousands and caused extensive economic damage.
“People were still recovering from last year’s floods,” Sanyal said. “And before they could fully adapt, the next one came.”
The Hindu Kush Himalaya region stretches across Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and China. It contains the largest concentration of ice outside the polar regions and provides water resources for nearly 2 billion people.
Glacier Loss Creates New Risks
Glacier ice loss has accelerated significantly since 2000, according to climate researchers. Another growing concern is thawing permafrost, which can weaken mountain slopes and increase the possibility of landslides.
Satellite images from the recent disaster indicate that a large mass of bedrock and glacier ice collapsed into a valley, creating a wave of water and mud that traveled several kilometers downstream.
Experts warn that as climate impacts intensify, some areas may become too dangerous for reconstruction, forcing communities to relocate.
Adaptation Challenges in Mountain Communities
Climate experts say adaptation measures can reduce risks, but some communities may have already reached their limits.
“The adaptation threshold has been crossed in some areas,” said Manjeet Dhakal, a Nepali climate policy expert and United Nations climate negotiator.
Unlike earthquakes, which may destroy buildings but leave land usable, catastrophic floods can erase entire landscapes by damaging homes, roads, schools, water systems and electricity infrastructure.
Experts recommend stronger land-use regulations, improved infrastructure planning, better early warning systems and greater consideration of Indigenous knowledge in disaster preparation.
Nepal has expanded warning systems, but challenges remain. Some residents did not understand alerts because they were visitors or migrant workers unfamiliar with the language, while others underestimated the danger.
Nepal Faces Climate Impacts Despite Low Emissions
Nepal contributes less than 0.1% of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet it is experiencing some of the most severe consequences of climate change.
Saswata Sanyal and other experts argue that countries responsible for the majority of historical emissions must take greater action to reduce global warming and support vulnerable regions.
“We should blame those who are responsible for increasing the global temperature, those who have benefited from the fossil fuel economy for such a long time,” Dhakal said.
The Himalayan floods serve as another warning of the growing challenges facing mountain communities as climate change accelerates. While improved planning and adaptation can reduce risks, experts say urgent global action to reduce emissions remains essential.
