Health officials investigate salmonella cases in San Diego County
San Diego County health officials are investigating a possible salmonellosis outbreak linked to a market in Ramona that has affected 13 people.
Authorities believe Ramona Family Naturals Market may have been the source of the outbreak after allegedly using raw, unpasteurized eggs to prepare mayonnaise that was connected to the illnesses.
Four people hospitalized after infection
The individuals affected by the outbreak are between 27 and 60 years old. Four people required hospitalization after their symptoms became more severe.
Investigators are working with the market’s owner to determine the origin of the eggs that may have contained Salmonella bacteria.
San Diego County officials said the market owner has cooperated with health authorities and has stopped using raw, unpasteurized eggs in all food products.
Health officials warn customers to monitor symptoms
People who recently ate at Ramona Family Naturals Market are being advised to monitor their health and contact a healthcare provider if symptoms develop.
Salmonellosis symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. In some cases, diarrhea may contain blood or mucus.
Symptoms usually appear within days
Symptoms typically begin between 12 and 72 hours after consuming contaminated food and usually last between four and seven days.
Most people recover without medical treatment, although some cases may require medical attention, particularly when symptoms become severe.
Customers can report possible infections
Individuals who are currently sick or have recently recovered after visiting the market can report their illness to the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health Quality.
Health officials are continuing their investigation while working to identify the exact source of the contaminated eggs and prevent additional cases.
