Restaurant chain takes precautionary action as health officials investigate outbreak

Chipotle has removed jalapeños from some of its restaurants after identifying the ingredient as a possible link to a Salmonella outbreak currently being investigated by public health officials.

The decision follows reports that Minnesota health authorities are examining a Salmonella outbreak connected to jalapeños served at Mexican-style quick-service restaurants, with Chipotle among the businesses being reviewed.

Health officials investigate reported cases

According to reports, the Minnesota Department of Health has identified 110 cases of Salmonella Javiana linked to the outbreak.

Among the people interviewed after becoming ill, most reported eating at Chipotle locations during the period under investigation. Health officials are continuing to investigate the source of the outbreak and whether a specific ingredient is responsible.

Chipotle removes jalapeños as precaution

Chipotle said it is aware that public health authorities are investigating the potential source of a Salmonella outbreak affecting multiple food service retailers.

“The health and safety of our guests and employees is our highest priority,” the company said.

After learning about the investigation, Chipotle activated its ingredient traceability system and identified jalapeños from a common lot as a possible shared ingredient.

The company said it removed the jalapeños from restaurants as a precaution and replaced them with products from different growers.

FDA begins traceback investigation

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is also conducting a traceback investigation involving jalapeños and other possible sources connected to the outbreak.

Chipotle said its ingredient traceability system allows the company to quickly identify and respond to potential food safety concerns.

Investigation raises concerns after past food safety issues

The latest investigation brings renewed attention to Chipotle’s previous food safety challenges. In 2015, separate E. coli outbreaks linked to meals from the chain sickened dozens of people across multiple states.

A separate Salmonella outbreak in Minnesota that same year was traced to tomatoes served at one Chipotle restaurant.

Following those incidents, Chipotle introduced significant changes to its food safety program, including stronger ingredient tracking systems and additional safety measures across its supply chain.

Chipotle stock falls after outbreak report

Shares of Chipotle Mexican Grill declined sharply following news of the investigation, falling nearly 10% during trading.
