France Turns National Day Into a Show of Support

Ukrainian fighter pilots and troops were placed at the center of France’s Bastille Day celebrations on Tuesday, as the country used its national military parade to highlight support for Ukraine and display a broader message of European defense unity.

Macron Hosts Leaders in His Final Bastille Day

For President Emmanuel Macron, this was his final Bastille Day as head of state. He welcomed around 30 other leaders to the ceremony, in an event that appeared designed to send a message to both Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump that Europe is united and increasingly prepared to defend itself.

Zelenskyy Receives a Warm Welcome

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was applauded by the assembled European leaders, while Ukrainian troops drew some of the loudest cheers from the crowds lining the Champs-Elysees. At the end of the parade, Zelenskyy and Macron embraced several times.

A National Holiday With Several Backdrops

This year’s Bastille Day unfolded during a difficult moment for France. The celebrations coincided with forest fires, a red-alert heat wave, cancellations of some traditional fireworks and firefighters’ balls, and growing excitement over France’s World Cup semifinal against Spain.

What Bastille Day Commemorates

Bastille Day is celebrated on July 14 because that was the day in 1789 when Parisians stormed the Bastille fortress and prison. The event helped ignite the French Revolution, which led to the fall of the monarchy and the execution of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette.

A Central Symbol of French Identity

The holiday remains one of the most important dates in France’s national calendar. Presidents use it to showcase the country’s achievements, mayors organize local festivals and families gather for picnics and community celebrations.

The Parade Returns to the Champs-Elysees

The centerpiece of the holiday is the military parade in Paris, held beneath the Arc de Triomphe and along the Champs-Elysees. A large French tricolor flag hung under the monument as a military band on horseback moved down the avenue, followed by Macron in an open military vehicle.

Heat Does Not Stop the Crowds

Spectators wore hats and used small fans to cope with the heat. Overhead, French air force planes roared across the sky, trailing red, white and blue smoke in one of the most recognizable moments of the annual parade.

Ukraine Named Special Guest

Zelenskyy watched the ceremony from the special viewing area alongside Macron and other leaders. Ukrainian troops marched along the cobblestoned avenue, while Ukrainian co-pilots trained in France flew aboard two Mirage 2000B fighter jets with French air force pilots.

Allied Troops Highlight European Unity

The ground parade opened with around 500 troops from the “coalition of the willing”, a group of countries that have promised to help support Ukraine’s postwar security. Many of the soldiers have served in NATO operations, and NATO’s chief was also present.

Macron Calls It a Strategic Awakening

Macron said it was a “great honor” to welcome Ukraine and the coalition partners to the parade. He described their participation as a sign of Europe’s strategic reawakening and unity at a time of war on the continent.

European Forces Join on Land and in the Air

Foreign troops marched in combat fatigues and dress uniforms while carrying their national flags, a break from tradition. Aircraft from Germany, the United Kingdom, Poland, Denmark, Greece, Sweden, Norway, Spain and Italy also took part in the aerial display.

Record Number of Troops March

The parade set a record for participation. The Paris military governor said 7,600 troops marched this year, compared with 5,810 in 2025. Thousands of soldiers took their positions early Tuesday, with many taking photos as helicopters flew overhead.

World Cup Fever Takes Over After the Parade

As the parade ended, French attention shifted to the national soccer team’s World Cup semifinal against Spain in Texas. While Macron greeted people on the Champs-Elysees, some spectators spoke with him about France’s chances of victory.

Tricolor Flags Fill the Country

The French flag was visible across the country, from sidewalk cafes and bars to hundreds of fan zones set up in cities and small towns. Many of those spaces began filling hours before the match.

Tour de France Adjusts Its Schedule

Bastille Day also coincided with the annual Tour de France cycling race. Organizers adjusted the timing of Tuesday’s stage so that the finish would not compete with the military parade for viewers.

Heat and Wildfires Complicate Festivities

France is facing its third heat wave of the year, with forest fires burning in the Fontainebleau forest south of Paris and in parts of southern France. These conditions forced authorities in some regions to scale back or cancel traditional celebrations.

Some Fireworks and Firefighters’ Balls Cancelled

Authorities in several areas, including Paris, banned fireworks and firefighters’ balls normally held around Bastille Day. The measures were introduced because of the fire risk and extreme heat.

Eiffel Tower Show Goes Ahead

The Eiffel Tower’s fireworks and drone show was maintained and held Monday night. One drone formation took the shape of the Statue of Liberty, a symbolically important image because the statue was a gift from France to the United States.

A Parade With a Political Message

This year’s Bastille Day combined national memory, military ceremony, support for Ukraine, European defense signaling and the pressures of extreme weather. The prominent role given to Zelenskyy and Ukrainian forces turned the parade into a message that reached far beyond France.
