Smoke raises concerns ahead of New York match
Heavy wildfire smoke has blanketed much of the Northeast, prompting air quality alerts and raising concerns about outdoor activities ahead of Sunday’s World Cup final in New York City.
The main question for organizers and fans is whether pollution levels will remain a concern when Argentina and Spain meet for the championship match.
While a rainy weekend would normally be unwelcome, the incoming weather system could help improve conditions by clearing smoke from the region.
Storm system expected to clear smoke
A storm system moving through the Northeast on Saturday afternoon and evening is expected to bring rainfall that will help remove airborne smoke and temporarily shift wind patterns away from wildfire regions.
The system is currently moving through areas affected by wildfires near the Minnesota-Canada border, where it is expected to reduce fire intensity and limit additional smoke production.
The combination of rainfall and changing winds should improve air quality across the Northeast in the days following the storm.
New York could see heavy rain before the final
New York City is expected to experience periods of heavy rain on Saturday afternoon and evening. Some intense downpours could create a risk of brief flooding, particularly in urban areas.
However, forecasts indicate that the storm system should move away by Sunday morning, leaving improved conditions for the afternoon match.
Weather conditions expected to improve for World Cup final
Sunday afternoon’s final between Argentina and Spain is expected to take place under mostly favourable conditions, with temperatures forecast in the low 80s Fahrenheit.
Skies are expected to be clearer, although some haze may remain from lingering smoke higher in the atmosphere.
Air quality is unlikely to be completely perfect, but officials expect conditions to be significantly better than those experienced during the previous days.
