The LIV Golf League has canceled its scheduled individual and team championship event in Michigan, making this week’s tournament in Indianapolis the final event of the season.
The season-ending championship was originally scheduled for August 27-30 at The Cardinal at Saint John’s in Plymouth, Michigan. The cancellation comes as the league works to reduce costs and restructure its long-term business model.
LIV Golf shifts focus to future league model
LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil said ending the season early will allow the organization to focus resources on its next phase and create a more sustainable structure.
“We are reimagining LIV Golf as a fundamentally new league owned by the players and anchored in a sustainable business model,” O’Neil said, adding that the league aims to improve its fan experience and expand in international markets where golf continues to grow.
Indianapolis event becomes final tournament
Jon Rahm has already secured the individual season championship for the third consecutive year. The LIV Golf Indianapolis tournament, beginning Thursday at The Club at Chatham Hills in Westfield, Indiana, will determine the remaining top individual positions and the team champion.
The league also canceled previously announced concerts featuring country artist Thomas Rhett and Disco Lines, apologizing to fans, local partners and the performers involved.
LIV Golf seeks new funding after Saudi backing ends
The restructuring follows an announcement from O’Neil earlier this month that LIV Golf had secured outside investment intended to keep the league operating beyond the current season.
The investor was not identified, and financial details have not been disclosed. LIV Golf expects to finalize the agreement in the coming weeks, with the transaction expected to close in September.
O’Neil is reportedly seeking between $250 million and $300 million in new funding after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund announced it would no longer finance the league. The fund reportedly invested more than $5 billion into LIV Golf over its first five seasons.
Player ownership planned for next phase
The 2026 LIV Golf schedule includes 12 events, the smallest season since the league launched in 2022. The league said its next version will make golfers the majority equity owners, which O’Neil described as a first for a major global sports organization.
As LIV Golf prepares for its next chapter, the league says it will continue relying on support from players, fans, sponsors, employees and partners to build a more sustainable future.
