Knockout opponent becomes almost certain

The United States men’s national team is increasingly likely to face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Bosnia’s 3-1 victory over Qatar on Wednesday secured third place in Group B and created a greater than 99% probability of a knockout meeting with the Americans next week.

Senegal and Austria remain mathematical alternatives, but each has less than a 1% chance of becoming the United States’ opponent. A draw between Bosnia and Qatar would have produced several additional scenarios.

Rankings favor the United States

The prospective matchup appears favorable for the USMNT. The United States occupies 14th place in the FIFA rankings, while Bosnia and Herzegovina is ranked 62nd.

Qatar was eliminated following Wednesday’s defeat. Bosnia, meanwhile, is now positioned to meet the Group D winner, a place already secured by the Americans.

Türkiye match carries limited consequences

The United States must still complete its group campaign against Türkiye on Thursday. However, the result will not alter its position at the top of Group D, while Türkiye has already been eliminated.

The match will therefore provide the coaching staff with an opportunity to manage playing time, protect important starters and prepare the squad for the knockout stage.

Round of 16 route also looks manageable

If the USMNT defeats its Round of 32 opponent, it would then meet either the winner of Group G or another third-place qualifier.

Belgium is the only potential opponent in that round currently ranked above the United States. The Belgian team occupies 10th place globally but still needs a victory and favorable results elsewhere to win Group G.

Americans arrive with attacking momentum

The United States has scored six goals across its first two matches, already matching its highest group-stage total at a World Cup despite having one fixture remaining.

The campaign began with a convincing 4-1 victory over Paraguay. A subsequent 2-0 win against Australia guaranteed qualification for the Round of 32.

First place in the group was confirmed later that evening when Paraguay defeated Türkiye.

Historic consecutive victories

The results against Paraguay and Australia marked the first time the US men’s national team had won consecutive World Cup matches since the inaugural tournament in 1930.

The Americans will face Türkiye at 10 p.m. ET on Thursday. Their Round of 32 game, most likely against Bosnia and Herzegovina, is scheduled for next Wednesday in the San Francisco Bay Area.
